WHO WE ARE

Our History

The Perishable Council of Southern California was born in the Summer of 1959 when Bob Kearney (Deli Director of Certified Grocers), Harold Schneider (Deli Buyer for Food Giant), and Sydney Fischer (broker for Champion Food Sales) came up with the idea of getting all of the deli buyers and salespeople together. They weren’t sure what this could turn into, but knew there would be tremendous benefits for the industry if they could form a type of club or organization that united all of the parties involved. Sam Freed (Grand Taste Packing Co.) was recruited to discuss what this could look like and the newly founded organization had its preliminary meeting at Roger Young Auditorium.

More than 60 years after its inception, the group is alive and well and has evolved to keep up with all of the various changes of the Grocery Industry. The enthusiasm and desire to make things “better” gave life to this beautiful Council and is embodied by every single member of the leadership team who selflessly dedicates their time and effort to ensuring the initial purpose and bylaws are upheld.

Together, the group is dedicated to:

  1. Promote goodwill and develop longstanding relationships within the perishable industry

  2. Exchange ideas and stimulate interest in all facets of perishable merchandising

  3. Tie-in with national events to raise awareness and drive sales of perishable categories

  4. Keep our members well informed of developments in manufacturing, packaging, distribution and display of all perishable categories

  5. Unite our resources to solve mutual industry problems

  6. Become industry leaders in Perishable sales, merchandising, and operations

The Perishable Council of Southern California, previously known as the Dairy, Deli, & Bakery Council of Southern California, would go on to become one of the premier trade associations in the retail food industry.
